Client

A leading provider of managed care services exclusively for government sponsored healthcare programs wanted to become the best-in-class service provider. They charged Morgan Samuels to identify and recruit the best operational and managerial talent at the COO level to drive profitable growth.

Considerations

The company was growing very quickly and the position required a leader with experience with shared services and high transaction volumes in a regulated industry who had worked on multiple cross-functional projects involving a high degree of collaboration. In addition, the CEO and Board of Directors originally wanted to exclusively focus the search within the managed healthcare industry.

Morgan Samuels suggested a broader research strategy which considered talent from other industries – those that were also highly regulated, had to conduct billions of transactions a year, and in which the security of information was paramount. Beyond healthcare, we looked at candidates in the telecommunications and financial services industries, which we knew had world-class operations talent. Morgan Samuels reached out to over 330 potential candidates and presented to the client best-in-class talent from both within the managed healthcare industry and from outside.

Impact

We ended up successfully recruiting an extraordinarily talented executive who came from the mobile phone industry and served on the board of a hospital. He had extensive executive management experience with a proven track record of performance improvement in complex operating environments. The non-healthcare executive rapidly acclimated to the new industry and achieved operational excellence for the organization. In fact, the placement was considered as one of the two finalists to be the CEO after only 18 months in the role.
